Standing Up for Food Workers in Austin

This past month, Good Work Austin staff, board members, and business owners have been actively advocating for food workers, who are the backbone of our local food economy. We are proud to amplify their voices and ensure that their needs are heard by decision-makers.

As part of our advocacy work, GWA and our member business owners participated in the Central Health budget process, pushing for increased access to healthcare for food workers.

Healthcare is a fundamental need, and for many in the food and beverage industry—especially those in lower-wage positions—access can be limited. By engaging in this process, we are helping to ensure that food workers can get the care they need without financial hardship.

In addition, we spoke at the Austin City Council meeting to urge the city to limit permit fee increases for food businesses and to ensure that local food and beverage establishments have a seat at the table in policy discussions that directly impact them. These conversations are critical for sustaining vibrant, locally owned businesses that not only serve our communities but also provide fair and stable jobs.

At Good Work Austin, we believe that advocating for food workers and local businesses is more than a one-time effort—it’s an ongoing commitment. We will continue to be a strong voice for the people who make Austin’s food scene thrive and for the businesses that are doing good work every day.
