GFiber & Good Work Austin Launch Digital Inclusion Pilot to Expand Workforce Opportunities
Partnership equips culinary trainees with technology to build digital and job readiness skills, secure employment and support long-term stability
Today, GFiber, formerly Google Fiber, announced a new partnership with Good Work Austin on a digital inclusion pilot program that expands access to technology for participants in the organization’s Culinary Workforce Training program. The initiative is part of GFiber’s ongoing commitment to advancing digital equity and supporting pathways to economic mobility in Central Texas.
Make it stand out
“At GFiber, we believe access to fast, reliable internet and technology creates opportunity,” John-Michael Cortez, head of government and community affairs at GFiber, said. “This partnership with Good Work Austin is about more than connectivity. It is about ensuring people have the tools they need to build careers, support their families and move forward with confidence. Together, we are investing in solutions that remove barriers and create lasting pathways to economic mobility.”
Through this partnership, GFiber provided 12 Google Chromebooks to a cohort that began training in March 2026. Participants use the devices throughout the program and keep them upon completion, ensuring continued access as they pursue jobs and long-term career growth.
Good Work Austin’s Culinary Workforce Training program supports individuals facing significant employment barriers by providing hands-on culinary instruction along with life and job readiness skills. However, limited access to reliable technology has made it harder for participants to complete coursework, earn certifications and apply for jobs. By integrating digital access into workforce training, the pilot helps participants complete online certifications, access financial literacy resources and build essential digital skills for today’s workforce.
“Access to technology and digital inclusion is essential for success in today’s workforce,” Kara Hanaoka, executive director at Good Work Austin, said. “GFiber’s support allows us to remove a critical barrier for our trainees and ensure they can fully participate in the program and beyond. At Good Work Austin, our mission is to foster healthy, equitable careers in the local food and beverage industry, and this partnership strengthens our ability to connect and uplift our community with the tools they need to succeed.”
The pilot will run through May 2026, with outcomes evaluated based on certification completion, job readiness, participant confidence and employment placement. Findings will help inform future expansion and additional cohorts.
